No matter where you’ve grown up, there is one place to which your soul is so tethered that it almost feels like an externalisation of your personhood. It seems that for Freddy Birdy, that is what Taj Mahal Palace Hotel, or The Taj, as he so endearingly calls it, is. In a carousel post on Instagram, he shared that aside from his birth, almost all of the major events of his life have been celebrated there.

He then went on to highlight how each and every aspect of The Taj is ingrained in his memories. Freddy started by saying that his Navjote Ceremony or the holy Thread Ceremony took place there. He mentioned how if you were having an arranged marriage, then you probably met your partner-to-be for the first time at their Sea Lounge over high tea.

While the soon-to-be couple were busy getting to know each other, the families wandered around the establishment. Nalanda, the bookshop inside The Taj, would probably be one of the places that they headed to. He also reminisced about Shamiana, the tented coffee shop that operated 24 hours a day. Even at midnight, the place would be packed with the people he knew!

He even went on to reminisce about the time he won an award while celebrating at the chic nightclub at The Taj and blunderingly invited more people than he could pay for. An influential friend of his, Ashok Kurien, ended up paying for it then. Welp, who hasn’t been drunk and overestimated their capabilities?

The Taj has recently completed 120 years. It stands in Mumbai as one of its most important landmarks and is a beacon of regality, opulence and excellence. Even for those who couldn’t afford to go inside, and who made up a majority of Mumbai, it stood as an architectural marvel which promised hope. There was absolutely no one who visited the Gateway Of India and didn’t stop to show admiration for it!
