The unprecedented attack by Hamas, several airlines cancelled their flights to Israel and their cities. However, now, several airlines are resuming their flight service and one of them is Lufthansa. Here are the updates on flight service to Israel.
Lufthansa To Resume Flight Services To Israel
After the service was halted in early October in response to the Hamas attack on Israel, German airline group Lufthansa announced on Friday that it intended to start operating again in Tel Aviv on January 8. According to a statement from Lufthansa, the group’s airlines will initially provide a total of 20 weekly connections to and from Tel Aviv. This is approximately equivalent to 30% of the typical flight schedule.
In addition to Austrian Airlines and SWISS, Lufthansa Airlines will resume service, providing connections from Frankfurt and Munich. In response to Hamas militants’ unprecedented strike against Israel on October 7, the Lufthansa group suspended flights to Israel on October 9, citing security concerns.
Following the incident, flights to Tel Aviv were cancelled by several other airlines, including American carrier Delta, British Airways, and Air France-KLM. Ethiopia Airlines declared that it is starting to fly again to Israel after stopping operations since the start of the war. On Dec 1, the airline’s five weekly flights between Tel Aviv and Addis Ababa resumed.

According to the group, Lufthansa and its subsidiaries SWISS and Eurowings began flights to Beirut on Friday. According to the statement, the Lufthansa Group is in close communication with both local and international authorities and is still keeping a careful eye on the security situation in Israel. It’s necessary to plan for any changes to the flight itinerary due to unforeseen circumstances.
Airlines Which Are Still Not Operating
The cancellation of flights to and from Tel Aviv through March 29 was announced on Friday by American Airlines (AAL.O) and Delta Air Lines (DAL.N). According to Delta, it is still assessing the circumstances surrounding this service in particular.
United Airlines (UAL.O) announced on Friday that it will continue to cancel its flights to Tel Aviv until the weather permits. British Airways, whose owner IAG (ICAG.L) announced on Friday, has stopped flights to and from Tel Aviv through January 10, Vueling until January 13, and Iberia Express until February 29.
Regarding whether they will also start operating in Israel again, EasyJet (EZJ.L), Ryanair (RYA.I), and Air France-KLM (AIRF.PA) did not answer right away. According to reports, in January, Ryanair plans to terminate all of its flights to and from Israel. A formal statement regarding the situation has not yet been made public.
Since the conflict began on October 7th, the number of flights arriving and departing from Ben Gurion airport has decreased by 80%, from 500 daily to just 100. Due in part to insurance companies’ refusal to cover them, the majority of foreign airlines have cancelled all of their flights to Israel.
The three Israeli airlines, El Al, Arkia, and Israir are carrying on with their flights thanks to government insurance guarantees.
