Inspired by the pure, irresistible, mouth-watering culinary traditions of the Kashmir valley, this famed eatery takes diners on a delectable adventure through the unique flavours of Kashmiri cuisine. Hailing from the valley nestled in the Himalayas, Kashmiri food boasts a rich history and a distinct blend of influences. Bringing Kashmir To The World

India’s first-ever Kashmiri cuisine chain restaurant in Delhi NCR, Matamaal, which translates to ‘nani ka ghar’, stands true to its name in the homely experience and warmth it provides to all who visit. Kashmiri couple Nalini and Surender Sadhu, passionate about sharing their tradition, aimed to bring Kashmiri cuisine to the global front.

Kashmiri cooking, the heart of Matamaal’s menu, boasts a unique blend of influences. From the Mughals came the love for slow-cooked stews and fragrant kebabs. The land itself, nestled in the Himalayas, offers a bounty of fresh ingredients—think plump morels, river fish, and saffron threads.

A Culinary Journey Steeped In Tradition

Guests are welcomed with a cup of Kahwa, a traditional Kashmiri green tea prepared with whole spices, saffron, and nuts like walnuts or almonds and is aromatic, warm, and mellow.  The experience includes Wazwan, Kashmiri breads, artefacts, and spices that make you feel closer to Kashmir. It’s a symphony on your palate with the subtle smokiness from slow cooking over traditional fire pits.

Rogan Josh, the crown jewel of Kashmiri cuisine, is a must-try at Matamaal. Slow-cooked lamb bathed in a fragrant yoghurt-based gravy and infused with aromatic spices, it is a dish that lingers in your memory long after the last bite. Another star is the delicate tabak maaz, crispy fried lamb ribs served with a tangy chutney.

The place boasts traditional architecture that features a traditional sit-down dinner. It also has an in-house Shikara, a samovar, a mini spice market, tonnes of pherans and shawls, paper mache, lots of pickles and types of bread.
