Recently, the Dubai Roads & Transport Authority revealed that approximately 50% of the work on the Garn Al Sabkha-Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road intersection has been completed. As it happens, the scope of work involves the construction of four bridges that are spread over 2874 metres. As a result, it will be able to handle a traffic capacity of 17,600 vehicles per hour once complete!

50% Work Complete On The Garn Al Sabkha-Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Road Intersection

The project, which has nearly been completed by 50% is being taken as a response to the directives of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum. He is the Ruler of Dubai, and the Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE. As such, the aim of the project is to cope with the ongoing urban and population growth in the emirate. It’s worth mentioning that the contractor has already completed the construction of the foundations and columns of the bridges. Now, the work is underway for casting the bridge walls, expanding the roads, lighting works, installation of iron support, and rainwater drainage networks. However, what is so fantastic about this project is the fact that it will reduce the travel time by 70%.

Reduction In Travel Time By 70%

Yes, according to His Excellency Mattar Al Tayer, who is the Director General, Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors, RTA, once the project is complete, the journey time for traffic heading from Garn Al Sabkha Street to Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road towards Al Qusais and Sharjah, will see a reduced journey time of 40%. Not to mention, this will also reduce the travel time during the peak hours from 20 minutes to just 12 minutes! Of course, it will also reduce the journey time for people going from Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road right to Al Yalayis Road in the direction of Jebel Ali Port from 21 minutes to just seven minutes.

What About The Four Bridges?

As such, the aim of the project is to plan an upgrade of Garn Al Sabkha Street, which is a crucial project linking Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Road and Sheikh Zayed Road. It’s worth noting that the project includes the construction of four bridges as mentioned previously.

  • The first one spans 943 m, it will be constructed at the Garn Al Sabkha Street and Al Asayel Street intersection. A two-lane bridge in each direction, it can accommodate 8000 vehicles per hour in both directions once complete.
  • The next bridge will be extending to about 601 m and will comprise two lanes. Serving traffic moving from Garn Al Sabkha Street Westwards towards Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road Northwards, and further heading towards Al Qusais and Sharjah. As it happens, this bridge will have a capacity of 3,200 vehicles per hour.
  • The third bridge will be spanning across 664 m and will also feature two lanes. Eliminating the overlapping of traffic from Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road heading Northwards towards Al Yalayis Road in the direction of Jebel Ali Port, it will be able to accommodate 3200 vehicles per hour.
  • The fourth bridge will be spread across 666 m, and will also comprise two lanes. It will also eliminate traffic overlap from Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road to the service road that leads to the entrance of Dubai Production City. With a capacity of 3200 vehicles per hour, it will ensure a smooth traffic flow.

The Project Also Includes Roadwork

It should also be noted that the project includes roadworks over 7 km, which also includes the announcement of surface intersections, street lighting, traffic signage, rainwater drainage system, irrigation network, and traffic system. A crucial step towards improving, Dubai’s transportation system, this project is surely going to make things easier for people in the emirate.
