Our favourite season — winter is finally here! And along with the mood of staying cosy under blankets all day, this season also makes us crave something delicious. Winter in India calls for cooking food that not only warms our bodies but also provides the right nourishment. Because winters truly hit different when the kitchen smells of fresh, hearty ghar ka khana! So, here we’ve got you 5 delicious Gujarati winter dishes you can cook at home.

If you’re a Gujarati food lover, here are 5 mouth-watering dishes you can cook in winter.

1. Undhiyu

For muthiya, mix besan with chopped methi, red chilli, turmeric, sugar, lemon, baking soda, salt and a little oil. Then prepare soft dough and shape it into small pieces, and deep fry on medium flame until golden. These muthiyas help in thickening Undhiyu and make the curry more hearty.

For masala, mix grated coconut, roasted peanut powder, sesame seeds, coriander, green chilli-ginger-garlic paste, sugar, lemon and salt. Stuff the mixture into brinjals and potatoes and then cook along with winter vegetables like surti papdi, valour papdi, tuvar lilva and green peas. Lastly, enjoy it with some pooris.

2. Patra

If you’re looking for a delicious Gujarati side dish this winter, try preparing Patra. For this, mix besan, spices, jaggery, tamarind and water into a thick batter. Spread it over colocasia leaves, layer, fold from all sides and roll it tight. Steam the roll till cooked, cool it and cut into slices. Then temper with mustard, sesame and hing before tossing it gently and crisping it up. That’s it, enjoy it hot with green chutney. 

3. Bajra Methi Thepla

If you’re a thepla lover, then do try bajra methi thepla. To prepare this, mix fenugreek, spices, oil, wheat flour and bajra flour. Add water slowly and knead a soft dough. Make small balls and roll them into theplas. Cook in a hot pan, apply a little oil on both sides and roast till golden. These taste great with pickle, curd or simple potato sabzi.

4. Dal Dhokli

Enjoy hot and delicious dal dhokli this winter season by following this simple Gujarati recipe. Start with pressure cooking toor dal with peanuts. On the other side, mix wheat flour, besan and spices, add oil and water, and knead a slightly stiff dough. Roll it, cut into small diamond pieces and keep ready. Add spices, jaggery, tomatoes and tempering to the dal, then drop in dhokli pieces slowly and cook till soft. Finish with lemon and coriander.

5. Bajra No Rotlo

If you’re looking for a healthy and stomach-filling alternative to roti, try preparing bajra no rotlo. Mix the bajra flour and salt, add warm water, and knead a soft dough. Shape small balls, flatten them, and roast on a hot tawa till both sides cook well and get light brown spots. Serve hot with ghee or butter on top. This is best enjoyed with sev tamatar sabzi
