Would you believe that Jonathan, an old and still so adorable tortoise, is older than Paris’ Eiffel Tower and London’s Tower Bridge? But yes, it’s true. He is 194 years old and looks not a day over 100. Jonathan currently lives on the South Atlantic island of St Helena. Guinness World Records has now reaffirmed his status as the oldest known living land animal. He has also been named a GWR ICON for 2026, and we are so happy for him.
The Seychelles giant tortoise was born around 1832 and has now lost its sense of smell due to age. But according to the official Guinness World Records website, local vets confirm that Jonathan is in great condition and even has a healthy appetite. GWR also took to X to make an announcement, writing, “Jonathan the tortoise is officially a Guinness World Records ICON.”
The Tortoise Loves To Eat Grass
Interestingly, Jonathan’s cells do not appear to mutate in the same way as human cells. Experts are currently analysing his DNA to learn more, as the average life expectancy of his species is around 150 years.
The tortoise is affectionately called Ol’ Jono by locals. Jonathan spends his days with three other tortoises in the gardens of the Governor’s residence, eating grass and lazing under the sunshine. And yes, he glows!
