The much-awaited carnival celebrates Goan culture and life with music and dance, and here’s why you need to head to Goa to check out this carnival.
Goa Carnival History & Significance
It is believed that the Goa Carnival has been celebrated since the 16th century and was introduced by the Portuguese rulers in the region. This carnival is a pre-Lenten festival and is a reflection of Goa’s 450-year-old Portuguese heritage. It was originally a festival meant to be celebrated before the 40-day period of Lent, a solemn Christian religious observance of fasting.
The modern-day Goa Carnival is highly inspired by Brazil’s Rio Carnival and was revived in 1965 by Goan musician Timoteo Fernandes. It has now evolved into a grand public celebration and showcases Goa’s rich cultural heritage, traditional music, dance performances, and artistic floats. Each year, the chosen King Momo, the ruler of festivities, leads the carnival parade and gives the famous declaration, “Eat, drink, and make merry!”
