Rajkot International Airport in Gujarat has now finally commenced its flight operations as of September 10, 2023. With this, the old Rajkot airport has ceased its operations since Friday night. Men and machinery from the old airport have been shifted to the new airport, which welcomed its first commercial flight on Sunday. From its inauguration to its cost and features, here is everything you need to know about this new airport in Gujarat. 

Gujarat’s Rajkot International Airport commences operations

Gujarat’s Rajkot International Airport is located on the Rajkot-Ahmedabad highway. About a month and a-half earlier, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had inaugurated this airport.

The Airports Authority of India (AAAI) ceased commercial flight operations at the old Rajkot airport, located in Jamnagar. But the old airport will continue to handle VVIP flights, among others. On September 8, 2023, the last flight from the old airport took off. 

The new airport is 30 kilometers away from the old Rajkot airport and also from Rajkot city. To make the travel more convenient for the passengers, there will be bus service from the ST bus stop to Rajkot International Airport daily. This bus service will be state-run and will begin services at 6 in the morning and then every two hours.

Envisioned As A Transportation Hub

On July 27, 2023, Prime Minister Narendra Modi dedicated this greenfield airport to the nation. The cost to build this airport was more than ₹1,400 crore. It has been built on a total land area of over 2,500 acres. All the services from the new airport will be undertaken by budget airlines, including IndiGo Airlines.

The construction includes Apron, Parallel Taxi Track, Runway and more. The new Rajkot International Airport is envisioned as a transportation hub for all the travellers who will be heading overseas. It is a combination of sustainable features and modern technology.

The new airport has many sustainable features like LED lighting, a double-insulated system, low heat gain glazing, skylights, and more. The terminal building is Green Rating for Integrated Habitat Assessment compliant (GRIHA-4).
