H-1B is a type of non-immigrant Visa that allows tech and IT companies in the US to hire tens of thousands of professionals, mainly from India and China. It lets them keep their employment and work in the US but does not give them citizenship.

Initially, the H-1B Visa-holders would have to go back to their home country to renew it. But this exercise wastes time and money and could be streamlined. By allowing limited applicants to apply for renewal under the pilot programme without travelling back to their home country, the process becomes more efficient.

The application process began on January 29, 2024, and will continue until April 1, 2024, or till slots are filled, whichever comes first. These application slots will be released on January 29, February 5, February 12, February 19 and February 26, 2024.

This pilot programme will accept around 4,000 applications each week. Those who were unable to apply on one date may do so on any of the other dates. The application process will take around six to eight weeks.

Out of the 4,000 applications that will be processed, 2,000 of them will be applicants whose previous H-1B visas were issued by US Consulates and Embassies in India and the other 2,000 will be for those whose visas were issued by the diplomatic missions in Canada.
