Hemkund Sahib Yatra: Heavy Snowfall Leads To Travel Ban On Children And Elders Above 60 Years

Hemkund Sahib is one of the most famous Sikh shrines. It is beautifully nestled in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand. Thousands of pilgrims throng this pilgrimage site every year. But recently, owing to the heavy snowfall in this region, the shrine has imposed a travel ban. The officials from the shrine on Monday informed that they have imposed a travel ban on elderly people over 60 years of age and children.

Hemkund Sahib Imposes Travel Bond

The official notice from Hemkund Sahib in Uttarakhand stated that due to seven to eight feet of snow in this region, they have imposed a travel ban. According to this ban, children and people above 60 years of age should not be a part of the Hemkund Sahib Yatra.

The holy yatra is scheduled on May 20 as the doors of the beautiful shrine will open. Narendrajit Singh Bindra, President of the Hemkund Sahib Gurdwara Management Committee, said that the number of pilgrims visiting the shrine will be limited this time. This decision was based on the instructions given by the Chamoli district administration owing to the heavy snowfall in the region.

A Gurudwara On The Highest Altitude

Hemkund Sahib is a Gurudwara located at the highest elevation of 15,000 feet above sea level. It is situated near the Valley of Flowers in Uttarakhand. This holy shrine was named after the glacial lake Hemkund, which is adjacent to the Gurudwara and translates as “Lake of Snow.”

In the holy Granth Sahib, it is written that Guru Govind Singh, the 10th guru of Sikhs, meditated by the banks of this lake. The holy pilgrimage known as the Hemkund Sahib Yatra is a very difficult but picturesque one. The 6-kilometre Hemkund Sahib trek is difficult as there is very little oxygen and a lot of atmospheric pressure as the shrine is located 15,000 feet above sea level.
