1. Matcha Icecream

Matcha tea is synonymous to Japan. You cannot miss out on consuming Matcha tea in Japan. However, that’s not it. You have to try Matcha & Sakura ice cream as well. It’s unique, and you have to acquire a taste for it, but once you do, there’s nothing like it. Matcha is widely popular in Kyoto, so when in Kyoto you have to try this ice cream by all means. Also, take the Matcha cone, it’s too gram-worthy!

2. Crepe

Crepes are known across the world, but there’s nothing like a handy rolled up Harajuku Style crepe. Widely famous in the mecca of Kawaii culture, Harajuku, crepes are the popular Harajuku food. It’s the only area in Tokyo & Kyoto, where you can find crepes in abundance. Right from the classic Chocolate Banana to crepe to Bacon crepe, you can find everything under one roof in Harajuku. Visit the iconic Santa Monica shop at Takeshita Dori street, the stall is known for serving around 100 types of crepes.

3. Dorayaki

There’s nothing like having a good Dorayaki on the streets of Asakusa in Tokyo. Dorayaki is a red bean pancake which quite popular in the country. They are tasty, fluffy and a must-have in Japan. Often known as a breakfast staple in the country, one can indulge in Dorayaki in varied shapes. I tried the hello-kitty dorayaki, and the taste of it still lingers in my mouth.

4. Sakura Mochi

Mochi is quite popular in South Korea, but it’s equally popular in Japan and especially during the cherry blossom season. Try the sakura mochi in Tokyo, and I am sure you will regret it. It has a nice sweet flavour, which acts as a perfect traditional desert. So ditch the regular ice cream, and try this in Japan.

5. Kitkat

Yes, that sound’s absurd, but trust me, Japan is known for Kitkats. My eternal love for Kitkats and anime made me plan a trip to this country. While the rest of the world serves you the same old Kitkat, Japan is set to offer you over 15 varieties of Kitkats. From Matcha Kitkat to Orange Kitkat to Sakura, Strawberry and Apple Kitkat, some choices will completely bowl you over. Do try the classic Green Tea and Apple Crumble Kitkat, you will love it.

6. Japanese Cheesecake

There’s nothing like a soft fluffy Japanese cheesecake. I am not a cheesecake fan, but Japan made me fall in love with one. The texture of the cake is so perfect that it melts in your mouth. Cheesecakes can be a bit expensive, but I recommend you to try it at least once and also try it from the iconic Seven-Eleven convenience store, they serve pretty good quality too.

7. Yakitori

Yakitori is a barbecued chicken seasoned with salt or brushed with a sauce, mirin rice wine, soy sauce, sake alcohol, and sugar. There are many different types of yakitori, but the most common varieties are momo-chicken thigh, Negima- chicken and spring onion, and Tsukune-chicken meatballs. My personal favourite is Negima, so you must add that to the list.
