India Updates Visa Rules: Foreigners Planning A Longer Stay Must Register Before 180 Days

Foreigners come to India to explore its rich heritage, learn about its history, and of course enjoy its delicious food. They often stay in India for a long period. However, the country has now updated its immigration rules, so foreigners planning their trip should stay informed. India has tightened its visa rules. Read on to know what the new changes are.

India Tightens Visa Rules For Foreigners

Foreign tourists staying in India for longer periods must now follow stricter registration timelines.  As per Moneycontrol, the visitors who enter on visas valid for 180 days or less must register if they plan to extend their stay. What changes is that the system allowed registration within 14 days after completing 180 days in India. Now, authorities require foreigners to complete registration before the 180-day period ends.

There are also some foreigners who visit India on visas valid for more than 180 days, but they still have a condition. They cannot stay for more than 180 days at a time, and if they plan to extend their stay, they must complete their registration before their allowed stay period ends. This rule applies even if they leave and re-enter the country within a year.

The Government Has Also Allowed Some Exceptions

Don’t worry, the government will be lenient and allow you to register beyond the permitted period in case of an emergency. If foreign nationals have a child during their stay in India, there are a few rules they need to keep in mind. Earlier, parents had to inform the registration authorities within 30 days of the child’s birth if they wanted to apply for services such as a visa or an exit permit for the child.

However, under the new rules, there is some flexibility. If one parent is an Indian citizen and wants the child to retain Indian citizenship, certain foreign registration requirements may not apply. However, if the child later takes up foreign citizenship while staying in India, the parents must inform the authorities within 30 days of that change.
