Dhirendra Krishna Shastri, better known as Bageshwar Baba, has become one of the country’s most recognised spiritual voices over the last few years. From delivering kathas in a small town in Madhya Pradesh to addressing gatherings attended by thousands, his journey has been anything but ordinary. That belief unexpectedly finds its way into a conversation about… clothes. During an episode of Sunday Brunch, Kamiya Jani can’t help but compliment the cheerful yellow outfit he’s wearing. It’s the sort of colour people instinctively associate with saints and gurus. His response, however, isn’t what you’d expect.

Bageshwar Baba On Why Gurus Dress Alike

Bageshwar Baba laughs off the idea that he has a signature style and says people have probably seen him wrapped in a simple kambal just as often. There isn’t a wardrobe rule he follows, nor is he attached to looking a certain way.

Kamiya Jani, our editor-in-chief, then asks something many people have wondered at some point: why do gurus so often dress alike?

Instead of giving a philosophical answer, he reaches for an everyday example. Imagine a police officer walking into a crowd without a uniform, he says. People wouldn’t immediately know who that person is. The uniform creates a kind of recognition, and yes, it inspires trust. In much the same way, a saint’s attire serves as an identity. It helps people recognise the role before they recognise the individual.

But he doesn’t leave the conversation there.

Will He Ever Wear Jeans & Hoodie?

Almost immediately, he pulls attention away from the robes themselves. Looking after your tan, he says, is important. A healthy body is important. Yet your mann deserves equal, if not greater, care.

Then comes the line that steals the conversation.

“Vastron se nahin hota baba, vicharon se hota hai.”

A robe can make someone look like a saint, but it cannot make someone become one. Compassion, restraint, honesty and the ability to keep your heart free from malice matter infinitely more than what colour cloth rests on your shoulders.

He takes the thought one step further with another line that feels like an eye-opening reminder: “Sadhu sadhana se hota hai.” A saint is shaped through sadhana, through years of practice, devotion, patience and inner work.

We also asked him if we would ever see him in jeans and a hoodie! His answer was funnier than anyone could have expected. He said that this can happen only if he gets mentally ill.

This felt so Indian mother coded, who believes that her child has fallen to the face of the earth when they arrive home in ripped jeans and oversized hoodie.
