Why Has Japan Stopped Importing Indian Mangoes After 20 Years?

Japan has temporarily suspended fresh imports of Indian mangoes for the 2026 season for the first time in 20 years. The decision was taken after quarantine officers found that the fumigation and disinfection measures at Indian treatment facilities were not up to the mark. The move has disrupted exports of popular Indian mango varieties, including Alphonso, Kesar, Langra and more.

Japan Suspends Import Of Indian Mangoes

After ending a ban that lasted two decades, India resumed mango exports to Japan in 2006. But after 20 years of trade, Japan has once again suspended the import of Indian mangoes for the 2026 mango season. According to Moneycontrol, the decision was taken after Japanese quarantine inspectors found deficiencies in fumigation and disinfection measures at Indian treatment facilities during a March inspection.

Following this, the Yokohama Plant Protection Association, a public interest body that supports Japan’s plant quarantine operations, issued a formal notice dated March 31, 2026. The notice stated that mango shipments carrying inspection certificates issued by India on or after March 25, 2026, would not be accepted. The suspension will remain in place until the operational standards are improved.

Alphonso, Kesar & Other Indian Mango Varieties Impacted

According to Moneycontrol, the decision has significantly impacted the export of Indian mango varieties like Alphonso, Kesar, Langra and Banganapalli. Moreover, the suspension has come during the peak export window between April and June. Just before the mango season in India begins, Japan sends its quarantine officers to India. These inspectors examine the Vapour Heat Treatment (VHT) facilities used by Indian exporters.

VHT is a non-chemical quarantine process. In this, the mangoes are subjected to controlled heat and humid air conditions to eliminate flies and pests. It is a mandatory protocol before mangoes are exported to Japan. However, this year, the operational procedures were reportedly not up to the mark.
