Why State Revised Auto Fares?
In Tamil Nadu, auto rickshaw unions have been demanding a fare revision. According to NDTV Profit, the Tamil Nadu Auto Workers Federation, which is linked to CITU, has been asking the government to increase auto fares. Drivers say that fuel, insurance and vehicle maintenance have become more expensive. They are also facing competition from app-based cabs and bike taxis.
In 2022, the Madras High Court asked the Tamil Nadu government to revise auto rickshaw fares. Drivers even held strikes, and some started charging ₹50 as the minimum fare on their own. During a meeting in July, auto unions asked for a minimum fare of ₹70, while passenger groups wanted it to be ₹50.
