Diners at restaurants in Delhi, soon you will be able to judge a restaurant’s hygiene standards before planning to go there. MCD is planning to introduce a grading system modelled after New York City’s eateries. Here’s how this system works and how diners can benefit from it.
Delhi Restaurants Will Soon Get Hygiene Grades
The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has introduced a new hygiene grading system for local eateries and restaurants, modelled after New York City’s health programme. According to Hindustan Times, diners will now be able to judge restaurants based on a score out of 100, which will place restaurants in Grades A to D. The rating will be based on kitchen cleanliness, food handling, pest control, waste disposal and staff hygiene.
The system was introduced last month as part of the MCD’s first comprehensive revision of operational guidelines for eating establishments. Every restaurant will begin with a score of 100 during inspections. One point will be deducted for every minor violation and four points for major violations. Restaurants can face a deduction of 10 points for critical violations before a final hygiene grade is assigned.

Here’s How The New Grading System Works
According to Hindustan Times, restaurants scoring between 90 and 100 will receive Grade A. Eateries scoring between 75 and 89 will receive Grade B, while those scoring between 60 and 74 will get Grade C. Restaurants in Delhi scoring below 60 will receive Grade D.
Apart from this grading system, the authorities have also revised other rules. Food safety will now be inspected on parameters like food preparation, storage, kitchen sanitation, cleanliness of utensils, hand hygiene, ventilation and more. Food handlers will also be required to wear clean uniforms, head coverings and avoid jewellery while preparing food.
According to the guidelines, dedicated norms have also been introduced for barbecue, tandoor and grill operations. Eateries where cooking is visible to customers will have to install protective barriers and ensure adequate ventilation.
