What Are The Revised Passport Rules In India?

Under the Passports (Amendment) Rules, 2026, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) notified the changes. As per CNBC TV18, the new rule for Indian Passport is already in effect from July 1 and includes fees, validity and discounts.

What Is The Validity For Children Passport?

  • Passports issued to those below 18 years have validity for five years or until they turn 18, whichever comes first.
  • The passport will expire when the applicant turns 18, even if that happens before the five-year validity period.

What Is The New Passport Cost?

  • For applicants aged 18 and above, a 36-page passport costs ₹2,500, and a 60-page passport is worth ₹3,500.
  • Under Tatkaal, a 36-page passport costs ₹5,000, while a 60-page passport costs ₹6,000.
  • For applicants below 18 years, a 36-page passport costs ₹1,750.
  • Under Tatkaal, a 36-page passport for those below 18 costs ₹4,250.
  • For a lost or damaged passport, adults must pay ₹5,000 under normal service and ₹7,500 under Tatkaal.
  • For minors, the replacement fee is ₹4,250 under normal service and ₹6,750 under Tatkaal.

What Are The Discounts For Children & Senior Citizens?

  • Under the revised rules, fresh applicants will get a 10% discount. This applies to those below 8 years and above 60 years.
  • Note: This rule is only for fresh applicants.

Moreover, applicants between 15-18 age can select the category meant for those 18 or above. The new rules set the fee for Police Clearance Certificates, Surrender Certificates, Global Entry Programme verification and other passport-related certificates at ₹750 in India.
