We bring you a major update from Indian Railways. For the first time, traditional trains are being built to run directly beneath the new high-speed bullet train station in Ahmedabad. The new initiative aims to transform public transport infrastructure in Gujarat’s largest city, and here’s what we know so far.

Ahmedabad Railway Station To Become A Multi-Level Transport Hub?

As part of the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail project, also known as the bullet train project, the Ahmedabad railway station is being upgraded into a modern multi-level transport hub. According to Gujarat Samachar, the move will allow traditional Indian Railways passenger services to run directly beneath an elevated high-speed terminal for the first time in the country.

As part of the project, three newly constructed broad-gauge tracks and platforms, numbered 10, 11 and 12 at Ahmedabad railway station, have completed statutory safety inspections by the Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS).

Train Operations Expected To Begin Before Diwali

Commercial train operations beneath the bullet train corridor are expected to commence before Diwali. According to Gujarat Samachar, final administrative clearances and a formal rollout announcement from the railway administration are still pending. You would like to know that regular train operations on these platforms have remained suspended since July 2022 to facilitate the heavy structural engineering work required to make this multi-level transport hub a reality.

The three-tier arrangement will become operational soon.  The upper tier accommodating bullet trains, and the intermediate ground level will manage conventional express trains, Vande Bharat trains and local passenger services. The underground network will handle metro transit operations. All these transport services are expected to achieve integrated functioning by late 2028.

You would also like to know that India’s first bullet train project will connect Mumbai and Ahmedabad. The high-speed train will cover a total distance of 508 kilometres and is expected to take around six to seven hours to travel between the two cities.
