Mumbai Metro Line 5 Extension: How Kalyan And Ulhasnagar Commuters Will Benefit

The Centre has cleared Mumbai Metro Line 5 and its extension, Line 5A, paving the way for improved connectivity to Bhiwandi, Kalyan and Ulhasnagar. Centre Clears Kalyan-Ulhasnagar Metro Line 5A

According to the Construction World, the 11.9-km first phase runs from Balkum in Thane to Dhamankar Nagar in Bhiwandi, with six elevated stations. Built for ₹67.41 billion, the corridor will also provide an interchange with Metro Line 4, parts of which are expected to become operational on the Thane stretch during the current financial year. The original Line 5 plan envisaged a 24.9-km Thane-Bhiwandi-Kalyan corridor. However, extensive resettlement and rehabilitation requirements, along with a conflict with the Bhiwandi Bypass Flyover, delayed the second phase. The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority subsequently revised the alignment.

Under the revised plan, a section around Bhiwandi will run underground, while the corridor will be extended through Line 5A towards Kalyan and Ulhasnagar. The redesign is aimed at easing land acquisition challenges and ensuring better integration with existing infrastructure.

Metro Line 5A To Boost Connectivity Between Kalyan & Ulhasnagar

The second phase will cover 10.48 km from Bhiwandi to Durgadi in Kalyan and is estimated to cost ₹73.26 billion. Line 5A will add another 11.83 km at an estimated cost of ₹40.63 billion, creating a connection towards Kalyan and Ulhasnagar. The extended network will also feature an interchange with Metro Line 12, which is planned to connect the region with Navi Mumbai.

Authorities have targeted 2030-31 for construction of the extended network, with the full corridor expected to be completed in phases over the coming years. For travellers in Bhiwandi, Kalyan and Ulhasnagar, the project is expected to provide an alternative to the region’s already strained road and rail network while improving connectivity across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. Planned stations on the combined route include Kapurbawdi, Balkum, Kasheli, Kalher, Purna, Anjur Phata and Dhamankar Naka, followed by stations towards Bhiwandi, Durgadi, Kalyan and Ulhasnagar.

With the Centre’s approval now in place, the revised alignment and planned interchanges are expected to gradually transform commuting patterns across the region as different sections of the network become operational.
