Mumbai has become dangerous even to step outside for a while. The city is witnessing heavy rainfall that has flooded roads, caused train cancellations, and sadly claimed several lives. A red alert for heavy rain has been issued in several parts of Mumbai. Here’s a look at what’s happening in Mumbai amid the downpour.
How Many People Have Died Due To Heavy Rainfall In Mumbai?
The heavy rainfall in some parts of Mumbai has worsened the situation. Several rain-related incidents have been reported across Mumbai, Thane, Navi Mumbai, and nearby areas. News18 reported that, according to reports, over 10 people have died.
One of the terrifying incidents took place in Kurla. A 63-year-old man died after a tree crashed onto a roadside shop. In Saki Naka, another man drowned after accidentally falling into a manhole hidden beneath floodwater. In Chembur, an 11-year-old student lost their life when a tree fell on a school bus during the heavy rain.

Schools Shut Down In Mumbai
In Mumbai, two young girls died after a live electric wire fell into waterlogged surroundings. In Kharghar, two people lost their lives after entering the restricted Pandavkada Waterfall area despite warnings. Another incident was reported from the Mira Road-Bhayandar region, where a falling coconut tree killed one person.
Meanwhile, rescue teams are working near Lohagad Fort in Pune district. A landslide hit Patan village and trapped a family. Following a concrete pillar collapse and a landslide, authorities have shut down the Pune-Mumbai Expressway and the old Mumbai-Pune Highway in both directions.
Also on Monday, after debris fell on the railway tracks between Thakurvadi and Monkey Hill in the Mumbai Division, Central Railway cancelled 16 trains and diverted 9 others.
Hindustan Times reported that the State Disaster Management Authority advised private companies to let employees work from home wherever possible. It also announced a half-day for government and semi-government employees in the afternoon, except for those working in essential services. Authorities also decided to shut down schools and colleges to ensure students’ safety. The University of Mumbai cancelled all exams as well.
Now, the IMD has issued a red alert for Mumbai, Thane, Palghar and Raigad. The weather department has warned that the region could witness very heavy rain along with strong winds blowing at speeds of 50 to 60 kmph.
