The Mumbai-Pune Expressway’s Missing Link, which opened two months ago, has now been shut temporarily after heavy rainfall triggered a landslide near Tunnel 2. Many commuters were stranded on the road and faced delays due to the closure, which will remain in place until further notice.
Missing Link On Mumbai Pune-Expressway Shut Due To Landslide
The Mumbai-Pune Expressway is one of India’s busiest stretches. It is a six-lane expressway spanning 100 km, connecting India’s financial capital and Maharashtra’s cultural capital via Raigad. According to Moneycontrol, the expressway’s Missing Link, which opened just two months ago, is a 13-km bypass that cuts through the Sahyadri Mountains, reducing the commute by 6 km. But the route has been temporarily shut due to a landslide near Tunnel 2 amid heavy rainfall.
Traffic on the Missing Link alignment was diverted early on the morning of July 6, 2026, by the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC). The step has been taken as a precautionary measure to ensure the safety of commuters. Officials are closely monitoring the situation, and motorists are being advised to avoid travelling on the route.

Heavy Rain Disrupts Road And Rail Travel Between 2 Cities
According to India Today, vehicular movement on the Khandala Ghat stretch of the Mumbai-Pune Expressway has also been affected due to waterlogging, leading to traffic disruptions and delays. Vehicles are being rerouted through Lonavala, which has caused massive traffic jams on the route.
People have been left stranded and are facing disruptions stretching to hours. The Mumbai rain has also led to the suspension of rail services and the closure of the old Mumbai-Pune Highway. This has stranded commuters and severely disrupted travel between the two cities. Reportedly, at least 16 trains were cancelled, and nine others were diverted due to heavy rainfall. The IMD has now issued an orange alert for Mumbai and a red alert for Pune. Authorities have urged people to avoid travel between Mumbai and Pune until further notice.
