Nepal’s National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA) has advised tourists to avoid travelling to high-hill and Himalayan regions from October 29 to 31 as a weather system is expected to bring heavy rainfall, snowfall and possible avalanches across several parts of the country. Scroll down to know more.

Nepal Advises Tourists To Avoid Travelling To Himalayan Regions

In a notice issued on Tuesday, the authority advised tourists already in these regions to remain in safe locations. It also urged the public to postpone non-essential journeys during the three days as adverse weather conditions could disrupt travel and increase the risk of weather-related incidents.

The Nepal Meteorological Department has forecast widespread rain and snowfall from Thursday night. Heavy to very heavy precipitation is possible in parts of Koshi, Madhesh, Bagmati, Gandaki and Lumbini provinces on Friday and Saturday. Heavy snowfall is also expected in Himalayan and high-hill areas, raising concerns about snowstorms and possible avalanches. The warning could affect tourists planning mountain trips and other outdoor activities during the period.

Heavy Rain And Snowfall May Disrupt Transport

According to the NDRRMA, rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and strong winds could disrupt road and air transport, daily life, tourism and agricultural activities. The authority has asked people to stay away from high-risk locations, particularly riverbanks that may be vulnerable to flooding. Residents and visitors have also been advised to monitor official weather forecasts and early warnings and follow instructions issued by local authorities.

The weather system is linked to Cyclone Arnab in the Bay of Bengal, which is expected to make landfall in India on October 28 before affecting Nepal from Thursday night, according to the NDRRMA. With heavy precipitation and snowfall forecast across multiple regions, travellers have been urged to exercise caution and avoid unnecessary movement until conditions improve. The authorities have shared several contact numbers for weather updates and emergency assistance during the alert period.
