It was not too long ago when India banned the export of non-Basmati rice. As a result, ever since July, quite many UAE residents who went to visit India for their summer vacation are now returning with rice. However, a report by Khaleej Times mentioned that this phenomenon has mostly been a result of preference than anything else. For instance, some people are bringing regular packets of 5 kg of rice, as that particular type is available only in their hometown. Moreover, bringing the rice along saves some people as much as AED3.

It must be mentioned that people are not worried about the spike in the price of rice, as most people prefer Basmati rice. There are others who are, however, bringing along rice from their hometown as they may find that variety only in their home city. With the ban on exports by the world’s largest producer of rice, India, it is expected that retailers in the UAE might have to increase the price by 40%. However, this may not be the case for long as it is expected that exports from other countries like Pakistan, Vietnam, and Thailand will eventually fill the supply gap of non-Basmati rice.

So, if you are also an Indian expat, who recently visited your hometown, did you also bring along a packet of rice? Do let us know!
