India’s 1st Offshore Airport Coming Up In Maharashtra; To Handle 90 Million Passengers Annually

India is all set to get its first offshore airport in Palghar district near Mumbai. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis recently inspected the site and has directed officials to prepare a detailed project report. If everything goes as planned, the project will help reduce the increasing passenger pressure on Mumbai airport. Here’s what we know so far.

India’s First Offshore Airport To Come Up In Palghar

India’s first offshore airport near Kore Beach in Palghar district will definitely mark a major milestone in the country’s aviation and infrastructure achievements. According to the official X announcement by Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, officials have now been directed to prepare a detailed project report for the offshore airport in Palghar.

Before we get into details, let us briefly tell you what an offshore airport actually is. It is an airport built in the ocean, usually on a man-made island. These airports are built when big cities often run out of free land for huge airports. If this project becomes a reality, the offshore airport near will have connectivity to the Dedicated Freight Corridor (DFC), bullet train, Uttan-Virar sea link, Mumbai-Vadodara Expressway and Mumbai-Ahmedabad National Highway.

Airport Expected To Ease Pressure On Mumbai Airports 

According to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis’ X post, this offshore airport will also provide a major boost to cargo traffic at Vadhvan and Murbe ports. In addition to that, it will also be crucial in reducing the increasing passenger pressure and overcrowding at Mumbai airport.

According to The Times of India, the proposed site is approximately 4.75 km from the Uttan-Virar sea link. So, if authorities extend the link, direct connectivity to Mumbai can be achieved. The airport may have two runways and will be designed to handle around 90 million passengers annually. As per a report by NDTV, the offshore model has been successfully adopted by countries such as Japan, Hong Kong and South Korea to overcome land constraints.
