IndiGo Fined ₹5 Lakh For Denying Boarding To Specially Abled Child In Ranchi Airport

On May 7, IndiGo denied boarding to a specially-abled boy and his parents at Ranchi airport. A fellow passenger witnessed the incident and shared a lengthy post along with pictures of the same on social media. The incident went viral and many slammed IndiGo staff for their inappropriate behaviour. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) investigated the incident and imposed a fine of ₹5 lakhs on IndiGo for denying boarding to the specially-abled child and his parents.

DGCA Fines IndiGo ₹5 Lakhs For Inappropriately Handling Special Needs Kid

According to Business Standard, DGCA revealed to the media that to avoid such situations in the future, it will revisit its own regulations. It will soon be compulsory for flights to take the airport doctor’s written opinion on the health of passengers before taking any decision to disallow a passenger from boarding the flight. DGCA imposed a fine of ₹5 lakhs on IndiGo for their inappropriate handling of the incident at Ranchi airport.

DGCA To Implement New Regulations To Handle Specially-Abled Passengers

The new regulations of DGCA ensure that there will be a written consultation with captains of flights asking them for their opinion n permitting such passengers on board. The aviation regulator stated that the handling of the specially-abled child by the IndiGo ground staff was deficient and worsened the situation. More compassionate handling on their part would have smoothened the nerves, calmed the child and would have removed the need to take extreme steps like denying the child boarding. We hope all other flights take the necessary steps to smoothly and compassionately handle special-needs kids.
