Interact With Mona Lisa, Dolphins And Bruce Lee At India’s First 3D Trick Art Museum In Chennai!

What even is a 3D trick art museum? A picture is worth a thousand words they say. Optical art or 3D art has a technical French term, ‘Tompe-l’oeil’. We can’t say it either but, it means, ‘deceive the eye’. The form goes back 2,000 years: two dimensional figures create the illusion of a third dimension. A P Shreethar in Chennai just won the internet over with his interactive art. It works in mysterious ways and surprises observers when they least expect it. The artist told India Today that there are only 12 countries that have places like these, and India has joined the bandwagon. India’s first 3D, trick-art museum, Click Art Museum opened in Chennai in 2016 with the most unique display.

What is it

The interactive art displays are painted in 2D with the illusion of 3D. The exhibition is a huge crowd pleaser because the artist drew a place for the observer too. That’s right! you could be in that painting. The works are only complete with a person posing as part of the picture. The paintings are anticipating actions directed towards a void that is filled by the spectator. We can find out what the paintings feel like when people stare at them! There’s even a footmark near each painting where people should stand to complete the painting and a viewer photo point to immortalise the moment.

 What’s more

The feel of being around optical illusions is one of a kind. It just drives us insane and we never want to leave. Wouldn’t you love it if Mona Lisa’s eyes followed you around the room? While we look forward to our meeting with her, Chennai’s 3D museum seems easier to accomplish. A P Shreethar has an entire series on Mona Lisa. His other art installations are equally fascinating. A dolphin trying to reach a ball that you hold and Bruce Lee’s glass shattering kick attacking you are two of our favourites. Tamil Nadu has won our hearts! A P Shreethar picked famous characters to paint so that people could instantly identify them and relate to his work. Inspired art like this has bridged the gap between art and observer. Even if it is just for a selfie, we’re glad the exposure is making its mark!
