Although made in the 70s, and designed by Yoshikatsu Tsuboi, the Ashizuri Underwater Observation Tower is the perfect example of Japan’s idea of the future. The tower is located in the heart of the Ashizuri-Uwakai National Park in the Tatsukushi Marine Park in Kochi Prefecture. The observatory easily stands out because of its vivid red hue and its impact on Japanese architecture and engineering.

Coming to its design, it seamlessly blends with the natural surroundings. Nestled within a lush greenery-filled park, it provides ample opportunities for visitors to relax, enjoy the serene ambience, and admire the breathtaking ocean views.

In the Instagram video shared by a blogger named Matt, it takes us inside the observation tower. You can enter the observation tower, accessible by a bridge that spans over the water and measures 24 meters tall. The tower features views of both the seascape and the undersea. The tower is composed of two levels — one over water and an underwater one. You can reach the underwater level via a spiral staircase inside that takes guests 7 meters below water. And opens to a miraculous spot!

Girella, porcupine and butterfly fish can be seen throughout the year, while massive migrations of sardines and horse mackerels during the winter times. Barracudas, sea turtles and rays can be spotted in autumn.

With its stunning coastal setting, diverse marine life, and educational exhibits, this tower and aquarium stand as a testament to Japan’s rich aquatic heritage and commitment to environmental conservation.

One of the most remarkable features of viewing is its diverse collection of marine creatures in their natural habitats. From vibrant tropical fish to graceful sea turtles, from mesmerising jellyfish to playful dolphins, visitors can witness the beauty and diversity of marine life up close.
