Karnataka Permits Shops & Businesses To Remain Open 24/7 To Recover From Covid Losses

A new year and a new beginning for Karnataka as the government is issuing new directives to help restore the businesses and recover their losses from COVID-19. The government has allowed all shops and commercials establishments to operate on a 24/7 basis to help them. Recently the Karnataka government opened the state’s first rice ATM to help the needy. These initiatives will revive the revenue of the state amid the pandemic.

Shops & Businesses In Karnataka To Stay Open Round The Clock

The Karnataka government has said that all shops and commercial establishments employing ten or more employees can operate on a 24×7 basis. This move is aimed towards helping generate more employment and increasing the economic growth in the state. However, the government has also informed that no employee should work more than ten hours a day. As per the Labor Department’s notification, this 24/7 operations permit is valid for three years and will apply to those businesses that come under the Karnataka Shops and Commercial Establishments Act. This includes malls, hotels, and restaurants.

Employees To Work In Shifts & Get Paid For Overtime

Labour Commissioner Akram Pasha informed Deccan Herald that the notification was to help the businesses apply to both retailers and wholesalers. However, this does not apply to pubs, clubs, and bars as different regulations govern them, Pasha pointed out. Also, the government has mandated that every employee is entitled to at least one week off, and if an employee is made to work beyond the right hours, they will be paid an overtime allowance. Also, keeping women employees’ safety in mind, the government has mandated that no female employee works beyond 8 PM on any day in normal circumstances.

Speaking on this matter, the government told Deccan herald that, “Provided that an employer after obtaining written consent from a woman employee may allow her to work between 8.00 PM and 6 AM subject to providing adequate protection to her dignity, honor, and safety.” If an employer is found violating these arrangements, then they will face action.
