A recent survey by the National Sample Survey Office (NSSO) under the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation has revealed that Kerala is the leading state in non-vegetarian food consumption in India. The Household Consumption Expenditure survey revealed that the food expenditure of a rural household in Kerala on non-vegetarian food items is about 23.5%. This makes Kerala the highest non-vegetarian food-consuming state in the country.

The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation for 2022-23, revealed some interesting facts about India’s food habits. Giving an insight into the diverse dietary preferences of India, the NSSO’s recent survey showed how the food habits in the country change according to the region. One of its key findings was that Kerala is the highest non-vegetarian food consumer in India.

In its Household Consumption Expenditure survey, NSSO released data that shows about 23.5% of the food expenditure of the people in rural Kerala is dedicated to non-vegetarian items. Meanwhile, it is about 19.8% for urban Kerala residents. This makes Kerala the highest non-vegetarian food-consuming state in the country.

On the other hand, Haryana, Punjab, Rajasthan, and Uttar Pradesh topped the list of states with the highest amount of milk and milk products consumption. The survey revealed that other states rely more on processed foods and beverages as dietary preferences.

Top 5 States With Most Non-Vegetarian Food Consumption

While Kerala leads the list of highest non-vegetarian food consumption in India, here are the top five states that also have high non-vegetarian food consumption. It is interesting how this survey has given us an insight into the diverse dietary preferences of the people in India.

  1. Kerala
  2. Assam
  3. West Bengal
  4. Andhra Pradesh
  5. Telangana

The survey showed that in Assam, people in rural areas spend 20% of their total food expenditure on eggs, fish, and meat. Whereas, in urban areas, about 17% of the budget is reserved for meat. In West Bengal, people in rural and urban regions spend about 18.9% of their food expenditure on non-vegetarian items.
