Earthquakes can strike anytime, whether at the start of the day, midnight or in the evening. These sudden tremors can range from mild to strong and may cause damage in some cases. On Thursday, Leh in Ladakh was hit by a 5.5-magnitude earthquake. Read on to know more. 

5.5-Magnitude Earthquake Hits Leh-Ladakh

According to the National Centre for Seismology (NCS), a 5.5-magnitude earthquake hit Leh-Ladakh on Thursday morning. The earthquake occurred around 6 AM, and the NCS recorded it at 6:05:15 AM. The tremor occurred 10 kilometres below the ground.

Sharing the information about the earthquake online, the National Centre for Seismology wrote, “EQ of M: 5.5, On: 13/08/2026 06:05:15 IST, Lat: 36.881 N, Long: 74.402 E, Depth: 10 Km, Location: Leh, Ladakh.” Thankfully, no injuries or major structural damage have been reported.

Earthquake In Uttarakhand

Before Ladakh, a 4.2-magnitude earthquake struck Uttarkashi in Uttarakhand early Monday morning. The tremor was felt across several places in the district. According to the National Centre for Seismology, the earthquake occurred at 1:21 AM at a depth of 10 kilometres. As per NDTV, it was felt across several areas, including Uttarkashi, Barkot, Purola, Mori, Chinyalisaur and Dunda.

Sensing the tremor, people panicked and rushed out of their buildings. Thankfully, no casualties or major damage were reported.
