Restaurant Style At Home Ep 10: Goan Chicken Cafreal From Goa Porteguesa With Chef Deepa Awchat

Goan Cuisine is known for its intense flavors and our dish for today is the Goan Chicken Cafreal. It was brought to Goa almost 500 years ago. No one other than Masterchef Mrs. Deepa Awchat could do justice to it. She is also the co-founder of one of Mumbai’s favourite spot for Goan food, Goa Portuguesa. So lets learn how to make restaurant-style Goan Chicken Cafreal at home with the Masterchef herself!

Ingredients & Recipe

Chicken Marination 
Boneless chicken (400 gms)
Salt (1 tsp)
Ginger garlic paste (1tsp)
Turmeric (1 tsp)
8 to 9 sauce (1 tbsp)

Mix the chicken well and let it marinate for 20 minutes.

Cafreal Paste 
Diced onion (1)
Diced green chili (4 )
Diced ginger (1)
Diced garlic cloves (8)
Cloves (8)
Black pepper pods (8- 10)
Cinnamon (1 inch)
Poppy seeds (1 tsp)
Cumin seeds (1 tsp)
Cashew nuts (10)
Coriander (roughly chopped)

Mix all the ingredients and grind it into a paste. Your green Cafreal Masala is ready.

Chicken Cafreal
Oil (2 tsp)
Butter (1 tbsp)
Garlic ( 1 tsp)
Onion ( 2 tbsp)

Add the marinated chicken pieces and cook it for 5- 10 minutes. Add one cup of water and let it cook until the chicken is well done. Mix the Cafreal paste with the chicken and cook it again until chicken is tender. Finish it off by adding some tomato ketchup and salt according to taste.
