London To Launch The World’s Largest Car Free Zone

As a bid to help people maintain social distancing as well as to keep themselves fit, London Mayor, Sadiq Khan stated that the city will soon have the world’s largest car-free zone. While revealing details about the plan he claimed that along with the Transport of London (TfL), certain parts of central London will undergo transformation with a focus on walking and cycling. This is will help public transport cope with social distancing as the restrictions gradually ease, making London the world’s largest car-free capital city.

Londoners Understand The Joy Of Walking & Cycling

While referring to the plan, the London Mayor, Sadiq Khan stated that many Londoners have discovered the joys of cycling and walking during the lockdown. The plan is to now widen the pavements without consuming much time by closing roads to traffic and creating temporary cycle lanes. According to the Mayor, this will enable thousands of people to change their way or opt for other healthier options to get around the city.

As of now, the exact time frame and details for the plan has not been revealed. A spokesperson from the TfL claimed that they will divulge the exact street locations and timeframes needed after they finalize the details of car-free zones. They are currently working closely with London’s boroughs for this. Amid all this, The Mayor has also informed that people who can work from home, must continue to do so, and stressed one should make use of public transport only if it’s totally necessary.

Some London Streets Will Be Converted Into Walking & Cycling Streets

As per the plans some streets of London will be converted to only walking and cycling streets. And some others will permit buses. Popular streets like Shoreditch, London Bridge Holborn, Euston, Old Street, and Waterloo will likely witness limited buses, pedestrians and cyclists. This idea is widely appreciated by public health advocates and environmentalists and they stressed that this initiative will also help support sustainable travel.
