For nearly 190 years, Buckingham Palace has been the official residence of Britain’s monarchs. Now, King Charles III has decided to break this long-standing royal tradition by choosing not to move into the palace permanently, even after its refurbishment is complete. Read on to know why!
King Charles III To No Longer Stay In Buckingham Palace
King Charles III has confirmed that he will no longer stay at the iconic Buckingham Palace permanently once its major refurbishment project is completed in March 2027. You might be wondering where he and Queen Camilla will stay. The royal couple will continue living at Clarence House, which has been their London residence for many years.
This decision was announced as the £369 million renovation of Buckingham Palace nears completion after a decade of work. Even after this change, Buckingham Palace will remain the official headquarters of the monarchy. The palace will continue to host important royal events, including state banquets, diplomatic receptions, investiture ceremonies, meetings with the Prime Minister, and annual garden parties.

Parts Of Buckingham Palace Will Be Open To The Public
The most interesting part is that some parts of the Buckingham Palace will be open for public. Royal officials believe that allowing more visitors inside will help more people experience and appreciate one of Britain’s most famous landmarks.
The refurbishment began in 2017 and focuses on replacing outdated electrical wiring, plumbing, heating systems, and other essential infrastructure that had not been fully upgraded for around 60 years. Officials previously warned that ageing systems created risks such as electrical failures and fire hazards.
The latest royal financial records also shared an interesting detail. King Charles has become the first British monarch to publicly reveal how much tax he pays. He voluntarily paid £12.9 million in taxes during the 2024-25 financial year. He paid £11.7 million the year before. Since taking the throne in 2022, the King has paid more than £30 million in taxes. Also, the Sovereign Grant, which funds official royal duties, will decrease from £137.9 million to £99.9 million in 2027-28 after the palace refurbishment ends.
