‘The City Of Dawn’ — that is what Auroville means in French. This experimental township in the Viluppuram district of Tamil Nadu and some parts of Pondicherry was designed by architect Roger Anger. Auroville is around twelve kilometres away from Pondicherry and is a must-visit place. A place where people live on the principles of sustainability, peace and harmony. Intrigued, yet? Prime Attractions In Auroville

Auroville’s centre and most talked about tourist attraction is the Matrimandir — a place to find consciousness. This golden metallic sphere is equipped with a solar power plant. The place is stark white from inside and has a beautiful garden surrounding it. However, they have strict rules for visitors. Since it is a quiet place where people meditate, it will take some time for them to allow you a tour from inside.

The second attraction is Auroville Botanical Garden — home to more than three hundred and ten flora species. The garden is divided into different sections like the orchid house, fern house, Japanese garden, cactus garden, plumeria garden and so on. This place focuses on preserving and creating a place with diverse habitats. You can enjoy and learn about different plants and buy saplings at their nursery.

You can visit the Quiet Healing Centre for services like spas, health therapies, messages and other rejuvenation therapies. Moreover, the place is situated near the beach and has a perfect ambience. They also have a spa-like treatment centre where you can try yoga massages, Ayurvedic massages and beauty treatments like manicures, pedicures, facials, and so on.

Eat & Shop

The town has some amazing bakeries and cafes that offer delectable treats. Marc’s Cafe is one of the popular hangout spots in Auroville. This quaint place serves delicious English breakfasts, croissants, and coffee. Another place that you should visit is a bakery called Auroville Bakery and Boulangerie. Here you will get freshly baked treats like brownies, tarts, pies, croissants, and more.

In addition to these eateries, the place has handicraft shops that sell hand-woven hammocks, hand-carved stone sculptures, and body care products like shampoos, bath salts, massage oils, essential oil, and more.

Auroville has various accommodation options ranging from cheap to expensive. You can opt for a budget-friendly guesthouse to stay. For overnight guests, they are expected to contribute at least ₹100.
