Maharashtra is continuously working on improving connectivity to make travel easier. Now, one of the biggest projects the Maharashtra is looking forward to is the Virar–Alibaug Multi-Modal Transport Corridor (MMTC). The good news is that Phase 1 of this project has already received approval. Read on to know more about this corridor project!

Maharashtra Approves Phase 1 Of Virar–Alibaug Transport Corridor

The Maharashtra government has approved Phase 1 of the Virar–Alibaug Multi-Modal Transport Corridor. The estimated cost of this project is ₹31,793.47 crore. As per Free Press Journal, under this project, the government plans to build a massive 14-lane, access-controlled highway that will stretch around 126.06 km.

The main aim of this project is to make travel faster and smoother. As Phase 1 has now been approved, a 96.41-km stretch will be developed from Navghar in Vasai taluka to Balavali in Pen taluka. The corridor will pass through around 104 villages spread across Vasai, Bhiwandi, Kalyan, Ambernath, Panvel, Uran, Pen, and Alibaug. Looks like soon, Indians will no longer have to worried about long travel routes!

Which Expressways & Highways Will This Corridor Link?

This corridor will also connect to many highways and expressways like NH-48, NH-848, NH-61, NH-66, the Mumbai–Pune Expressway, and the Mumbai–Vadodara Expressway. According to Free Press Journal, the new project will also connect projects like the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA), the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link, and the upcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport. 

Officials believe that the corridor to significantly reduce travel time across the region by nearly 90 minutes. This project will be implemented by the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC). The government has planned to execute it under a Design, Build, Finance, Operate, and Transfer (DBFOT) model through a public-private partnership. 

Here’s the bifercation of the cost. The total cost includes ₹21,533.66 crore for construction, along with additional expenses such as financing costs, contingencies, GST, insurance, and escalation charges. Earlier approvals also included ₹22,250 crore for land acquisition and ₹14,763 crore for interest-related liabilities.

To support financial viability, the government has approved viability gap funding of ₹6,259.32 crore. It is nearly 19.8% of the project cost. The proposal will now be reviewed by the central Public Private Partnership Appraisal Committee (PPPAC).

Maharashtra government is planning to complete this project in three years. Toll collection on the corridor will be fully digital. It will use FASTag, GPS-based tracking, and distance-based charging. The project will include nine major interchanges to manage traffic flow.
