Come January 1st, 2027, and individual residents in the UAE will have a limit of five licensed vehicles, each under federal traffic regulations. Yes, the additional fees applies to registration or renewal of vehicles beyond the first two. The requirement is outlined in the Cabinet Decision No. 174 of 2026. This approves the Executive Regulation of Federal Decree-Law No. 14 of 2024, which is on the Regulation of Traffic. Here’s all about it.
Five-Vehicle Limit Set For UAE Residents
As revealed in a report by Gulf News, individual residents under Article 89 are allowed to own up to two vehicles under the standard provision. However, those who wish to register or renew additional vehicles have to pay an extra fee for each vehicle. The total number of licensed vehicles does not exceed five per resident. This decision, however, does not specify the amount of the additional fee or how the limit would be applied to residents who already have over five vehicles registered in their names.
The Traffic Regulation Comes Into Effect On January 1st, 2027
As further mentioned in the report, this rule is a part of the wider set of requirements, which governed vehicle licensing and registration across the country. Article 89 also requires vehicle owners or the legally authorised representatives to submit licensing applications. This would be through the electronic channels or applications that are announced by the relevant licensing authority. They must comply with prescribed procedures and instructions. The article also prohibits licensing right-hand-drive vehicles. However, it does permit them to be used for display purposes.

More To Know About This
It’s worth mentioning that if a vehicle fails to meet the prescribed road safety requirements, they are in eligible for licensing under the regulation. It should be noted that the five-vehicle provision especially applies to individual residents. It does not set out an equivalent numerical restriction for companies in the same article. The regulation, however, does not specify whether the traditional fees will be uniform across the UAE. It does not either specify if the existing vehicle registration will be treated when the rules take effect.
The executive regulations, which were issued on October 6th, 2026, will now come into effect on January 1st, 2027. Basically, it places the previous executive regulation under Ministerial Decision No. 130 of 1997.
