Dubai has set out how it plans to keep its tables full in an unpredictable world. The Dubai Environment and Climate Change Authority has outlined five initiatives under the Dubai Food Security Strategy 2030, covering everything from home-grown produce to food that ends up in the bin.
The Thinking Behind The Strategy
The strategy has the approval of Sheikh Hamdan, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of the Executive Council of Dubai. It rests on five themes: availability, affordability, quality and safety, sustainability and resilience, and support for the food industry. The authority says it should help Dubai cope with global supply disruptions, market swings and climate-related pressure.
The Five Initiatives
1. Growing more at home
The first initiative expands local production, including fisheries and livestock, and backs small-scale farmers.
2. Sturdier supply chains
Dubai will diversify the markets it imports from and work with importers of key food commodities so that one disrupted route does not leave shelves bare.
3. Less waste, better data
Programmes to cut food waste will run alongside research into how people in the emirate consume food.
4. A Smarter Food Security Platform
Dubai’s Food Security Platform is due for improvements, though the authority has not said what they will involve.
5. Money for AgriTech
The fifth initiative adds more support for investment in agricultural technology.
The Numbers Behind The Plan
When the strategy was approved in November 2024, WAM reported that it included 20 projects worth AED164 million. Its targets were to reduce annual food waste and loss by 2 per cent, grow the number of high-tech agricultural projects by 15 per cent and raise community awareness of food security to 90 per cent. Dubai Municipality leads the work, while the Dubai Environment and Climate Change Authority implements it.

What It Means For Residents
Affordability is one of the strategy’s stated pillars, so the aim is steadier supply and fewer shocks at the checkout when global markets wobble. Cutting waste also helps at home, since it is a part of the plan that depends on everyday habits. Farmers, fishers and AgriTech start-ups are the ones who stand to gain from the production and investment pushes.
