Planning to drive near Al Maktoum International Airport this week? Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority has announced temporary closures on Emirates Road (E611) and at the Al Maktoum International Airport Tunnel. The reason: highway testing for autonomous taxi companies.

E611 Lanes And Airport Tunnel Close For Day Tests

What Is Closing And When

Three lanes of Emirates Road, opposite Al Maktoum International Airport, will be shut. Expect the airport tunnel to be closed in both directions. The closures run from 26 to 31 October, daily between 9am and 4pm. Outside those hours, the roads are not affected by the notice.

What The RTA Is Asking Drivers To Do

The authority has urged motorists to plan journeys ahead, follow the directional signs and allow extra time if their route passes through the affected stretch. The RTA shared the notice on social media and has not named the companies involved in this round of testing.

Why The Tests Are Happening

Autonomous taxis are the reason why. The RTA has signed deals with several operators, including Baidu, WeRide and Pony.ai, as it works towards a long-stated goal of making 25 per cent of trips in the emirate autonomous by 2030. Testing on a live highway, as opposed to a closed track, shows how these vehicles handle higher speeds and real road conditions.

Tips For Getting Around

  • If your journey falls between 9am and 4pm, build in extra time.
  • Consider travelling earlier or later in the day if your plans are flexible.
  • Check your flight details with your airline and leave early for the airport.
  • Keep an eye on RTA channels for any changes to the schedule.
  • Follow road signs and staff directions on site, as lane arrangements may differ from what you are used to.

With the tunnel shut in both directions, drivers who normally use it should plan an alternative before they set off rather than deciding at the entrance. Signs and staff directions on site remain the most reliable guide, so allow a few extra minutes to read them and avoid last-minute lane changes.

The closures start today, Monday, so anyone commuting along E611 near the airport should factor them in right away.
