Zayed National Museum hardly needs any introduction. It is the national Museum of the United Arab Emirates. And this museum recently unveiled its Calm Room. Yes, the museum has become the first one in the UAE to introduce a space that is dedicated for neurodivergent visitors. Here’s all you need to know about the Calm Room.

Zayed National Museum Unveils Calm Room

Zayed National Museum unveiled its Calm Room, which coincided with the museum’s ‘Accessibility Conference 2026: From Barriers to Belonging – Accessibility in Museum Practices’. This is happening until November 5th. As it happens, the Calm Room has been developed in consultation with the neurodivergent community. It has been designed in such a way that it supports visitors who might experience sensory overload or may require a quieter environment.

Supporting Neurodivergent Individuals

Sensory overload happens when the brain receives more sensory information than what it can process comfortably. As a result, it leads to a feeling of overwhelm or distress. As revealed by Gulf News, the museum has been designed in such a way that it supports these visitors. This includes autistic people and even those who have sensory processing differences. Other people, like those with ADHD, can also benefit from the Calm Room.

Zayed National Museum Accessible Exhibition Design Manual Announced

Talking about the room, there is dimmable lighting, a sensory kit, fidget tools, calming sounds, a crash mat, and other supportive resources. As a result, these resources allow visitors to adapt to the environment to their individual sensory and access needs. It is available without any advance booking. Visitors who experience sensory overload or feel overwhelmed can just ask members of staff for access.

Not only this, but the Zayed National Museum Accessible Exhibition Design Manual was also announced by the museum. This is available in Arabic and English and is developed especially for museums. The manual is first of its kind in the region, which is to the international accessibility standards.

These additions build on the museum’s wider approach to accessibility. Not to mention, it has been developed in collaboration with community stakeholders and the people of determination. With the museum offering accessible facilities and interpretation, sensory resources, Emirati Sign Language tours, and tailored programmes, such as Quiet Morning, it’s truly making the museum accessible for everyone.
