Mumbai’s metro network is on the move again! The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) is all set to energise the Overhead Equipment (OHE) system on a key stretch of the Mumbai Metro Line 2B from 8 April, marking a significant milestone in the city’s public transport development.
What’s Happening With Mumbai Metro Line 2B?
The OHE energisation work will begin on the 5.6-km stretch between Mandale and Diamond Garden. This involves supplying electric power to the overhead cables that drive metro trains—an essential step before trial runs can begin. The move signals that Mumbai Metro Line 2B is inching closer to becoming operational.
According to MMRDA officials, safety precautions have been announced for nearby residents and workers, as the lines will remain energised post-April 8. With this energisation, the groundwork is being laid for trial runs expected to begin soon.
Why Is This Section Important?
Mumbai Metro Line 2B is designed to run between D N Nagar in the western suburbs to Mandale in the east, with vital stops across Bandra, Kurla, and Chembur. Once completed, this corridor will help decongest major roads and reduce vehicular pollution—something Mumbaikars can certainly cheer for.
The Mandale to Diamond Garden section is being prioritised to fast-track commuter benefits. This early energisation could pave the way for partial operations by the end of the year.
Spotlight On The Mandale Depot
The Mandale depot in Mankhurd will act as a critical hub for the line. Built over 31 hectares, this two-level facility will house up to 72 metro rakes. The MMRDA has already energised the test track at the depot, with the first metro train successfully rolled out earlier this year.
As energisation begins, Mumbai Metro Line 2B is on track to transform commutes. It promises smoother, faster, and greener travel options for city dwellers.
