The Red Line’s expansion, Mumbai Metro Line 9, runs from Andheri to CSMIA and from Dahisar to Mira Road. Because it will cross a double-decker bridge, this metro line will be different from the others. Recently, the MMRDA authorities have proposed to extend the Mumbai Metro Line 9 to Dongri Depot.

Mumbai Metro Line 9 To Extend Till Dongri Depot!

In addition to extending Mumbai Metro Line-2B to Cheeta Camp, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has finalised plans to expand Mumbai Metro’s 11.38 km Line-9 (Red Line) to its recently discovered train maintenance facility in Dongri, Thane District.

MMRDA formally requested permission from the Ministry of Environment, Forestry and Climate Change on September 18 in order to extend the main line to Dongri Depot. The proposed Subhash Chandra Bose Ground Station Extension will be roughly 4.9 km long and include two new elevated stations at Murdha and Rai Goan on Uttan Road.

Additionally, Dongri Depot, which will connect Dongri with Mira Bhayandar, Dahisar East, Gundavali, and CSIA Terminal 2, will be constructed to stabilise and maintain BEML trains for the entire Red Line.

On a hillside with 41.36 hectares of land, Dongri Depot is planned to be built. The application from MMRDA emphasises that the land is unaffected by CRZ. Nevertheless, a few spots along the extended alignment in the CRZ IA (50M Mangrove Buffer), CRZ IB, and CRZ-II area are affected.

The primary line of this extension, measuring 4100/4825 metres, is within the CRZ, according to the environmental impact assessment (EIA) report by MMRDA. The CRZ application from MMRDA is now being looked at. It was examined between September 18 and 27 by Maharashtra’s Coastal Zone Management Authority, which has now requested additional information in writing through an official EDS (Essential Details Sought) letter.

If you follow the Mumbai Metro regularly, you may have noticed that Line-9 desperately needs a new depot to relieve strain on Charkop Depot, which is shared with the Yellow Line, for high-frequency train operations. The layout of Dongri Depot includes a workshop and stabilising lines capable of handling 8 coach trains. After the proposed extension, the Red Line will be 35.95 km long and include 4 sections.
