Mumbai Metro is expanding its reach to every corner of the city. Now, there are more metro lines operational at this movement and more are yet to come! At present, the construction of the Mandale metro depot is in progress and here’s all about it.

Mumbai’s Mandale Metro Depot To Park 72 Rakes!

Mandale will soon house Mumbai’s first elevated and largest Metro depot. Additionally, it will have space for 72 metro rakes. This depot will serve the 23.6-km elevated Metro Line 2B, which runs from DN Nagar to Mandale in Mankhurd and links the western and eastern suburbs of Mumbai. There are now two metro depots operating in Mumbai: one in Andheri for Metro Line 1 (Versova-Ghatkopar) and one in Charkop for Lines 2B and 7.

The Mandale depot, which is now under construction and spans 32 hectares of land, will have two levels: a ground floor and a first floor, each of which can hold 72 rakes. The depot will contain stabling lines in addition to technical and service buildings to oversee Metro line operations. Major civil work has been completed in the depot construction, according to the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), which is in charge of carrying out the project.

Challenges Faced During Its Construction

However, there are certain challenges like marshy land and heavy vehicles cannot access the road. In fact, a new bitumen road had to be constructed by clearing encroachments. Other than that, violation of nullah for the construction of electric cables, stabling lines and toilet block of the BMC.

The current status of the construction:

1. 1,395 metres of the stabling lines are finished.
2. 95 per cent of the civil work is completed.
3. 75 per cent of beam and slab casting is completed.
4. Track lining finished.
5. The simulator building’s ground and first floor are handed over to the MMRDA team.
6. RCC work is almost completed.

As per the MMRDA statement, facilities for a comprehensive overhaul of all Metro trains will be available at the Mandale depot. In addition, a simulator, similar to those used in aircraft, will be installed in the depot to provide training for Metro operators and pilots through real-time simulation. Moreover, it will have cutting-edge infrastructure.
