Mumbai & Delhi Airports To Get Faster Immigration Clearance; Others May Soon Follow Suit

Airports in India are notorious for their slow immigration clearance services which sometimes take hours. Many frustrated travellers in the past tweeted that the immigration process at the Mumbai airport takes longer than the flight itself. Keeping all this in view, the government is launching a quick immigration clearance program called the Trusted Traveller Programme. This means that certain passengers who are viewed as trusted will get faster immigration clearance.

In order to expedite the process of immigration clearance, the government has come up with a solution. Across all the International airports in the country, the government is set to introduce what is called the “The Traveller Programme.”

As per this programme, holders of the Indian passport who are also marked as pre-verified will be able to get through the security checks much faster. It is hoped that not only will this process help in clearing up the congestion at the airport, but it will also speed up the process.

As of now, only the Indira Gandhi International Airport or the IGIA in Delhi, and the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport or the CSMIA in Mumbai will have this programme implemented on a pilot basis.

According to an article by the Hindustan Times, this programme is only being implemented in the Delhi and Mumbai airports on a pilot basis. Soon after, 15 international airports in the country will receive it.

Following this, all the international airports in the country will have this programme implemented. The aim is to ultimately implement this programme in all the international airports in India so that the process of immigration clearance is expedited everywhere.

As of now, only people who hold an Indian passport will be able to avail of this programme. People who do not hold an Indian passport will have to go through the regular process of security checks. In keeping with this new scheme, Delhi Airport has already established three electronic gates, one of which is for departure and the other two for arrival. Other details about the programme are yet to be figured out.
