Back in 1948, the Indian government declared January 25 as National Tourism Day with an aim to bring Indian tourism into the spotlight. Since then, in a bid to honour the beautiful landscape and rich tapestry and diversity of India, each year we celebrate National Tourism Day on January 25.
Tourism makes up a major part of the Indian economy. Therefore, the government pays attention to raising awareness about tourism in the country. From ecotourism and cruises to rural and medical travel, India offers a range of travel experiences. Moreover, this day also signifies the importance of tourism for India’s social, political, and cultural worth in the world.
The day is observed each year to promote various popular tourist destinations across India, encourage people to explore these places and preserve the nation’s cultural heritage. Not to forget, this day also honours the people who work in the travel and tourism industry. Statistically, about 15.3% of Indian employees work in this industry. National Tourism Day recognises their contribution and encourages it as well.
