Navi Mumbai To Face Water Cuts 3 Days A Week; From Reason To Schedule, All You Need To Know

The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has implemented stricter water cuts due to low water levels at Morbe Dam, the city’s primary water source. To conserve water, there will be three half-day water cuts per week in most areas, except Digha (supplied by MIDC) and Airoli (experiencing two cuts weekly).

This initiative aims to save approximately 75 million litres of water daily. The morning water supply will remain unaffected. Residents are urged to be water-conscious during this period. These intensified measures come after NMMC previously implemented a one-day cut per week, then increased it to two days starting June 5th. The lack of significant rainfall in Morbe Dam’s catchment areas necessitates this precautionary step. While the monsoon arrived earlier than expected, it wasn’t enough to replenish the dam sufficiently.

Arvind Shinde, an executive engineer at NMMC responsible for Morbe Dam, said in a statement to Hindustan Times that water rationing is being implemented as a precautionary step because of inadequate rainfall in the dam’s catchment area, even though half of June has already elapsed. He reassured that the regular morning water supply would continue until sufficient rainfall occurs to replenish the dam’s water reserves.

The NMMC has proactively undertaken various water-saving initiatives. Treated wastewater is used for landscaping instead of potable water. Additionally, tackling illegal connections has saved 27 million litres of water daily. Furthermore, societies exceeding water consumption limits have received notices.

Here’s a breakdown of the new water cut schedule by area:

  • Airoli: Tuesday & Friday
  • Ghansoli: Wednesday, Friday & Sunday
  • Koparkhairane: Tuesday, Thursday & Saturday
  • Turbhe: Tuesday, Thursday & Sunday
  • Vashi: Monday, Wednesday & Friday
  • Belapur: Monday, Wednesday & Friday
  • Nerul: Tuesday, Thursday & Saturday
  • CIDCO Node: Monday, Thursday & Saturday

As of June 15th, Morbe Dam stands at a concerning 26% capacity, with water to last only 40 days. This level mirrors last year’s at the same time. Officials are urging everyone to conserve water to ensure the city can navigate this period until the monsoon brings significant rainfall.
