When all of its extensions are finished, it will have six runways, making it the fourth-biggest airport in the world and the largest airport in Asia. Depending on the availability of land, a proposal was presented in 2019 to add two more runways, bringing the total to eight runways.

It will also be the country’s first airport with net-zero carbon emissions. With eight and seven runways, respectively, Chicago-O’Hare and Dallas/Fort Worth airports are the only bigger ones. The existing airports in Amsterdam, Boston, Denver, and Detroit all have six runways. There are five runways in Atlanta, Houston-Intercontinental, Shanghai-Pudong, and Pearson in Toronto.

The Indira Gandhi International Airport has the most runways of any airport in India as of July 2023, with four. Folks are eagerly waiting for the project to be completed.
