According to a Financial Express report, officials have confirmed that the Veer Savarkar Airport at Port Blair is preparing for a momentous development. And, operations at the new terminal building are set to begin today.

The Airport Authority of India (AAI) has planned a special event in the new terminal to mark the start of operations. An AAI official said that in addition to being greeted with the rhythms of tribal dances, passengers entering the terminal will also get bouquets and the traditional tilak and aarti.

The local culture will also be conveyed through the gift of native Nicobari hats made from palm fronds, which will further enrich the experience. The terminal itself is a work of architecture, resembling a shell and reflecting the magnificence of the nearby islands. The terminal, which was built for ₹707.73 crore, is expansive and covers 40,837 square metres. It has a lot of natural lighting, which improves its energy efficiency.

The Prime Minister inaugurated the terminal on July 18 virtually. At peak times, this cutting-edge terminal can handle up to 1,200 passengers with ease, and it can handle an estimated 40 lakh passengers yearly. A flawless travel experience is ensured by its three-story layout, which has 28 check-in stations, 12 immigration counters, three passenger boarding bridges, and four conveyor belts.

Additionally, the airport’s freshly constructed apron space is set up to accommodate up to 10 aircraft at once. However, there was a little snag soon after the official opening. Strong winds caused a portion of the airport’s fake ceiling to fall unexpectedly.

The ceiling panels were dislodged during the installation of the CCTV cameras, which is what caused these winds.
