Correct Pronunciation is a tricky business. People often tend to mispronounce basic words. The most common area you are going to mess up with your pronunciation is food. Is it cha-as or cha-ach? Par-a-tha or Par-an-tha? Well there’s no harm in learning the correct way. Also, correct pronunciations are a great help while travelling. So here is a list of popular Indian dishes you might have been pronouncing wrong all this time.

1. Royyala Pulusu

This is a popular Indian dish from Andhra Pradesh and is quite hard to pronounce. If you are not a local, you might mess up on this one. This tamarind juice curry is mostly served with rice and is perfect for your foodie soul. The correct way to pronounce the dish is Ro-yya-luh poo-loo-suh, which translates to prawn curry. Royala iguru (ee-goo-ru) is your thick gravy, while vepudu (vey-pu-duh) is basically the fry version.

2. Puran Poli

This popular Indian sweet dish from Maharashtra is pronounced as poo-ran po-lli. The dish is a mixture of jaggery, flour, and cardamom and is cooked in ghee. To some extent, it resembles the Indian flatbread and is served with either toor dal or coconut stuffing. People often tend to mispronounce the dish as pu-ran po-li.

3. Chaas

Chaas is a popular card-based Rajasthani drink. It has different variations of its name in different locations. In Indian English, we often refer to it as buttermilk. A lot of people mispronounce it as Cha-ch when the correct way is ch-aa-ch or ch-aa-as. So this summer, get ready to beat the heat with the correct pronunciation!

4. Sandesh

Sandesh is one of the most popular Indian dishes and has its origins in Bengal. It is one of the most loved desserts in our country and is made from milk and sugar. Some recipes for the dessert also use chhena or paneer instead of raw milk. While it is a simple dish to make, the correct pronunciation of Shon-desh is quite a task.

5. Kadhi bari

The vegetarian dish Kadhi bari or Bari kadhi is one of the most popular Indian dishes. You will also find the dish in a few parts of Nepal. Made from Gram flour, dahi, and a mixture of spices, the pronunciation of this one often confuses people. Just keep the ‘h’ in kadhi silent and you are good to go.
