For the first time ever, Pune has constructed an underwater tunnel, across the Mutha river. developed by the Pune Metro Rail, this tunnel shall serve as a route from Shivajinagar to Swargate. Kolkata is developing India’s first underwater metro. Moreover, an underwater tunnel beneath Hoogly River shall come up in the city for vehicle movement. When it comes to Pune, this underwater tunnel below the Mutha river bed has been constructed for its underground route on April 26.

Underwater Tunnel To Come Up In Pune

According to The Indian Express, Hemant Sonawane, Public Relation Officer of Pune metro rail stated “Another first for Pune. There are many bridges over Mutha river with a few of them centuries old. The Pune metro rail has constructed the first underwater metro tunnel below the Mutha river bed for its underground route on April 26.”The metro rail will have two tunnels for up and down routes. Around 40 metres and 223 metres of the tunnels have been completed between Civil Court and Budhwar Peth metro stations. Sonawane revealed that it took around a month to cross the Mutha river smoothly sans problems.

Pune Metro Rail Has 2 Stretches

The underground tunnels for the same route are constructed from Swargate towards Mandai. So far, a 480m long tunnel has been completed. As per a report from The Indian Express, the complete metro rail has two stretches. The first is Pimpri Chinchwad via Shivajinagar to Swargate. The second is Vanaz to Ramwadi. Most of this rail route shall be elevated except for the route from Shivajinagar to Swargate. PMC also instructed Pune metro rail to prepare a comprehensive report for extending the metro rail route from Swargate to Katraj. The underground section is around 6 km with stations proposed to be built along Shivajinagar bus stand, Civil Court, Phadke houd, Mandai and Swargate.
