It has successfully brought together a stellar lineup of international and regional stars, filmmakers, and industry marvels. Running from November 30 to December 9, 2023, the festival stands as a beacon of cinematic excellence. It highlights the best in Arab and world cinema while nurturing the growing regional film industry.

Launched in 2019, the Red Sea International Film Festival is an annual cinematic event held in Jeddah, western Saudi Arabia. This festival, primarily concentrated on the latest trends in storytelling, shines a spotlight on emerging talents not only from Saudi Arabia but also from the broader Arab world and the Global South. A key objective of the festival is to lay the groundwork for a robust film industry in Saudi Arabia, aiming to play a role in diversifying the country’s income. The inaugural edition of the festival took place in 2021.

The festival’s allure is amplified by the presence of a dazzling array of luminaries. Bollywood sensation Shah Rukh Khan,  Ranveer Singh, Hollywood heavyweight Will Smith, Johnny Depp, Turkish celebrities, Hande Erçel, and Burak Özçivit, are just a few of the notable guests gracing the event. British actor British actor Ed Westwick and actress Amy Jackson were also part of the lineup. Similar to these a lot of celebrities have arrived in Saudi Arabia to attend this important film festival. Other global stars that marked their presence were, Sofia Vergara, Amina Khalil, Freida Pinto and more.

The festival kicked off with a mesmerizing opening night gala, featuring the world premiere of “HWJN,” a Saudi fantasy romance directed by Yasir Al Yasiri. Adapted from Ibrahim Abbas’s popular novel, the film unfolds the tale of a young woman entangled in a supernatural love affair with a jinn, a mystical being in Islamic mythology. Boasting advanced visual effects and motion capture technology, “HWJN” marks a milestone in Saudi cinema.

The opening night reached its zenith when Ranveer Singh was bestowed with the prestigious Yusr Award. This accolade honours actors who undergo remarkable transformations for their roles and deliver stellar performances. Singh, celebrated for his dynamic roles in films like “Bajirao Mastani,” “Padmaavat,” and “Gully Boy,” received the award from none other than Hollywood legend Johnny Depp. The exchange between the two actors, characterized by a warm hug and a photo-worthy moment, etched an unforgettable memory for fans.

Adding to the festival’s grandeur was the arrival of Will Smith, a global icon with a stellar filmography. Greeted by an enthusiastic crowd, Smith expressed his excitement about being in Saudi Arabia. The actor also participated in a masterclass, sharing his wisdom on acting, filmmaking, and life with an engaged audience. Talking about Masterclass, Red Sea IFF posted on Instagram about an In Conservation. Actress and actors like Katrina Kaif, Halle Berry and Ranveer Singh would be talking about their career and the slew of awards they have achieved so far.

The festival unfolded a diverse program encompassing films, workshops, panel discussions, and networking sessions. Covering themes like women in cinema, Arab cinema, digital media, and social impact, the program offered a rich tapestry of cinematic experiences. The Red Sea Souk, the festival’s market arm, provided a platform for filmmakers, producers, distributors, and investors to explore collaborative opportunities.
